The world’s oldest licensed distillery is The Old Bushmills Whiskey Distillery in Northern Ireland. Is origins date back to 1608 when King James I granted the landowner, Sir Thomas Phillips, a license to distil. In acknowledgement the distillery prints the date 1608 on all its bottle labels.

The world’s oldest gin distillery is The Plymouth Gin Distillery in Devon (known as the Black Friars Distillery) is acknowledged as the world’s oldest gin distillery, having produced its first gins officially in 1793. The distillery is based in a converted Dominican Order monastery which dates from 1431. The first gin was recorded as being produced by firstly distilling a raw spirit from rye and then re-distilling it with juniper berries to add flavour to the spirit.
