Spirits competitions to look out for in 2022

Over the last couple of years, South African spirits producers, distillers and distributors have made their mark at some of the biggest local and international competitions in the industry. 

Winning awards at these competitions is one of the fastest ways to become a well-known spirits brand. Awards can enhance your marketing strategy; help you reach hard-to-access audiences and improve your sales.

Let’s now explore some of the most popular spirits competitions to look out for in 2022: 

Spirits competitions coming up in 2022 

Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards

The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was established to offer South African producers the opportunity of having their wines and spirits judged by professionals from around the world. Now, in its 26th year, the competition remains unique in South Africa in that all judges are hand-picked experts, representing all seven continents.

The competition includes 11 categories under the spirits awards, including brandy, whisky, gin, vodka, rum as well as liqueurs, fruit spirits and RTD’s (Ready to Drink spirits cocktails). 

Entries for the 2022 competition open on 1 May this year. Those interested can bookmark the entry page that will go live once the competition has been announced. 

  • International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) 

The IWSC is proud to stand out in the crowded world of drinks competitions with over 50 years of experience. The competition includes hundreds of global experts. Every year, the competition receives entries from over 90 countries. 

For the 2022 spirits awards category, the direct delivery deadline is 11 February. The entry process is easy and can be done online here.  

The results in this category will be announced on the 16th of March 2022. 

Veritas 

The Veritas Awards is the longest-running competition in South Africa. It started in 1991 and gives recognition to wines and brandies of exceptional quality. 

More than 120 international and local judges gather every year in the Cape Winelands to judge the entries that cover the full spectrum of different styles and vintages.

The Veritas 2022 competition is not yet live, but entries will open online here

Old Mutual Trophy Spirits Show

The 2019 launch of the Old Mutual Trophy Spirits Show brought a new competition to the spirits and liqueurs sector of the South African liquor industry. 

This competition is open to all producers. It ranks all products across a series of categories, awarding gold, silver and bronze medals. It also awards a trophy to best-in-class submissions. 

The 2022 competition is not open yet, but updates will be posted on their website here

SA Craft Gin Awards

The SA Craft Gin Awards represents the first competition dedicated only to South African craft gins. It was founded to celebrate and promote the finest craft gins distilled in the country. The competition is open to all gin producers in South Africa.

  • SIP Awards 

The SIP Awards is the only international spirits competition levelling the playing field for both established brands and newcomers by selecting consumers as judges. The competition is open to all brands that produce spirits from any country, including distillers, producers, distributors, and public relations agencies.

For the 2022 competition, entries are currently open until the 28th of February. Entries can be made online here. Results will be announced on the 28th of April 2022.
