Description

Rumour has it that to celebrate Halloween, the Wee Beastie - wreathed in smoke and cloaked in the scent of crunchy barley sugar and sharp apples - will be unleashing a torrent of flavour in the form of a Halloween themed Ardbeque (Ardbeg Braai) this Saturday, 30th of October at the Raddisson Blu Hotel in Johannesburg.

Hailing from the remote isle of Islay, Ardbeg’s latest addition to the distillery’s Ultimate Range, the five-year-old Wee Beastie, will be making a statement in South Africa at the Radisson Blu hotel.

Rumour has it that to celebrate Halloween, the Wee Beastie will be unleashing a torrent of flavour in the form of a Halloween themed Ardbeque (Ardbeg Braai). Sundowner cocktails will be on hand to wet dry whistles and the best dressed voyagers will win a prize.

Patrick John Leslie, Whisky Portfolio Manager, says, “In the past ten years, six different Ardbeg expressions have won prestigious titles including World Whisky of the Year, Scotch Whisky of the Year and World’s Best Single Malt, so it is really exciting for us to share the latest addition to more and more South Africans.”

The Monster of the moment

It has long been said that if you ever happen to be on the isle of Islay then all you need to find the legendary Ardbeg distillery is to follow your nose or the advice of a good friend. At the end of that journey, you come upon the lair of the Wee Beastie, a feisty young single malt with a formidable taste.

“Over the years the South African whisky pallet has continued to evolve in the most remarkable way and we believe that the Wee Beastie will capture the imaginations of whisky lovers across the country. It’s flavourful, bold and adventurous, three qualities that we think South Africans possess in abundance,” said Patrick.

Having spent five years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before being unshackled, this monster of smoke lathers your palette with hints of crisp apples, ash, and a big hit of damp peat smoke to start.

Then, without warning, an explosive mouthfeel bursts forth with chocolate, creosote, and tar. Finally savoury meats sink into the palate, before the long salty mouthcoating finish slinks away… revealing the inner beast of this Islay icon.

The Wee Beastie is brash and youthful, tempering the raw character of the new-make spirit with just enough oak influence, without losing any punch. It is exactly what any aspiring Captain Ahab would take a dram of before confronting their personal Moby Dick.

What gruel goes best with a ghoul?

What pairs best with a Wee Beastie? Guests of the manner will have all sorts of spooky pairings to sample at the Ardbeque. For those looking to serve up some frightfully good tastings at home, Patrick suggests serving the Beastie with:

  • Roasted nuts
  • Smoked venison or ostrich
  • Middle eastern style lamb meatballs
  • Some good old fashioned dark chocolate
